Research interests and background

Systematics, phylogeny and biogeography of fishes in the Neotropical Region, with emphasis on characiform fishes.  Molecular barcoding and phylogeography.

Buckup received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan (U.S.A.) in 1991. He also holds M.Sc. degrees in Biological Oceanography from the University of Rio Grande (Brasil) and Biology from the University of Michigan. Currently he is a professor in the Department of Vertebrates of the Brazilian National Museum. He was a Founding Member of the Brazilian Society of Ichthyology in 1983 and of the Neotropical Ichthyological Association in 1989. He is also the current President of the Brazilian Society of Ichthyology (SBI).
