Jan RAFALSKI

Birthdate: April 1st, 1909
Birthplace: St. Petersburg, Russia
Nationality: Polish
Died: March 13, 1995

BIOGRAPHY: Jan Rafalski was born in 1909, in St. Petersburg to a Polish family residing in Russia. After the Bolshevik revolution the family escaped to Poland, and resided initially in Warsaw then in Poznan, where his father Julian was a professor of forestry at the College of Agriculture, and founder of the Department of Forest Engineering.
Jan Rafalski completed his university studies and Ph.D. at the University of Poznan, currently Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Poland, where he worked all his life, eventually becoming Professor and head of the Department of Animal Morphology. His lifelong interest included Pseudoscorpiones, Opiliones, Acari. He was a true naturalist, enjoying most his regular collecting trips. He worked until his eighties. He was most proud of the successes of his many students now in departments of biology all across Poland. His students remember well his beautiful blackboard drawings of various animals, executed in multicolored chalk during his general zoology lectures. He died in 1995.
His former department is now headed by Prof. Czeslaw Blaszak. There is another photo of him on that page.

DISCLAIMER — This resource was first intended as for private use of the members of the arachnology lab of Museu Nacional, but later we thought "why not to share this with the world?". Eventually if greedy lawyers (redundance...) start to bother us with copyright matters, etc, we may have to be forced to quit the project and keep this just to ourselves.
